Promoting Groundwater Conservation through Atal Bhujal Yojana

In collaboration with the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ground Water Department, Uttar Pradesh, Bharti Vikas Sansthan (BVS) served as the District Implementing Partner (DIP) under the Atal Bhujal Yojana (ABHY). This initiative aimed to enhance groundwater management and promote sustainable water practices in rural communities.

Project Coverage:

  • State: Uttar Pradesh.
  • Scope: Covered 9 Gram Panchayats.
  • Outputs:
    • Formation of 36 Water User Associations (WUAs).
    • Preparation of 9 Water Security Plans (WSPs).

Key Activities and Outcomes:

  1. Capacity Building and Training:
    • Conducted training sessions for WUA members and local communities on water conservation, groundwater recharge, and rainwater harvesting.
    • Focused on building local ownership and equipping stakeholders with practical tools for effective water management.
  2. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA):
    • Implemented PRA techniques to involve communities in planning and decision-making processes.
    • Used PRA tools to address issues such as groundwater depletion and wastewater management.
  3. Behavioral Change and Inclusion:
    • Sensitized communities on the importance of greywater management and groundwater recharge.
    • Promoted the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices to optimize water usage.
  4. Environmental and Health Benefits:
    • Improved groundwater quality and availability in rural areas.
    • Reduced environmental contamination, contributing to the prevention of waterborne diseases like diarrhea and malnutrition among children.

Impact:

The project empowered local communities to take charge of groundwater conservation, promoting sustainable practices that will have long-term benefits for water security and health. By fostering behavioral change and providing technical support, BVS ensured the successful implementation of ABHY.
