Driving Water Accessibility through Jal Jeevan Mission

Bharti Vikas Sansthan (BVS), in collaboration with the Ministry of Jal Shakti and State Water and Sanitation Missions (SWSM), played a pivotal role as an Implementing Support Agency (ISA) in executing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). This initiative aimed to ensure sustainable and equitable access to clean drinking water in rural communities.

Project Coverage:

  • Rajasthan: Covered 1886 Gram Panchayats (GPs).
  • Uttar Pradesh: Covered 160 GPs.
  • Madhya Pradesh: Covered 978 GPs.
  • Key Outputs:
    • Formation of 3024 Village Water Sanitation Committees (VWSCs).
    • Preparation of 3024 Village Action Plans (VAPs).

Key Activities and Outcomes:

  1. Capacity Building and Training:
    • Conducted extensive training for VWSC members and community representatives.
    • Focused on water quality, sanitation, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater recharge.
  2. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) Activities:
    • Encouraged local ownership through interactive community-driven planning and evaluation.
    • Used PRA tools for selecting water supply schemes and ensuring community participation.
  3. Behavioral Change and Inclusion:
    • Sensitized communities on Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs), wastewater management, and reducing biological contamination.
    • Promoted behavioral changes to address issues like malnutrition, stunting, and waterborne diseases.
  4. Environmental and Health Impact:
    • Improved water quality and sanitation infrastructure to reduce environmental contamination.
    • Enhanced health outcomes by mitigating risks of diarrhea, enteropathy, and related issues.

  • Increased local ownership and accountability in managing water resources.
  • Boosted awareness and adoption of sustainable water practices among rural populations.
  • Established effective monitoring tools to ensure the long-term success of the initiative.
